Niederzier moated castle/town hall
Completely restored and expanded, Niederzier Water Castle now shines in new splendour as the town hall of the municipality. The complex has had an eventful history, marked by destruction and reconstruction. The builders are believed to be the Jülich ministerial family von Zier, who have been mentioned in documents since the 13th century. In 1526, the siblings Jakob and Maria Bucks bought the water castle.
150 years later, French troops pillaged the town of Niederzier and the castle, destroying it down to its foundations. It was not until 1698 that the manor house was rebuilt, followed by the outer bailey in 1765. The structures on the west wing of the outer bailey are now the oldest surviving masonry.
In 1922, the municipality of Niederzier purchased the castle. During the Second World War, the complex was reduced to rubble, and the reconstruction of the main castle lasted until 1954. In the mid-1970s, administrative buildings were erected on the foundations of the outer bailey, which had been demolished in 1921. In the 1990s, the administrative building (Rentei) from the second half of the 18th century was repaired
